9 Budgeting Mistakes That Keep People Living Paycheck to Paycheck

If your account is nearly empty a few days before payday, you're far from alone. Often the problem isn't only how much you earn but a handful of habits that quietly drain the budget. Here are nine common mistakes and what to try instead.

1Building a budget on guesses instead of real numbers

Many budgets start with good intentions and round numbers. You decide groceries should cost a certain amount, dining out a bit less, and entertainment almost nothing. The trouble is that those figures often reflect what you wish you spent, not what actually leaves your account each month.

When the plan doesn't match reality, it breaks within the first week or two. Missing a target by a wide margin also makes it hard to tell which category is really causing trouble. That can feel like personal failure, and many people give up on budgeting entirely instead of adjusting the plan to fit their life.

A better starting point is your own history. Look back through a couple of months of bank and card statements and sort each purchase into broad categories. You may be surprised where the money goes. Once you know your true spending, you can set targets that are a little tighter than reality but still realistic, then trim gradually from there.
