7 Car Insurance Discounts Drivers Often Don't Ask For
Car insurance discounts aren't always applied automatically. Some depend on details your insurer doesn't know about you, and others only show up when you ask. Here are seven worth bringing up at your next renewal.
1Bundle your car with your home or renters policy
Many insurers give a lower rate when you keep more than one policy with them, such as auto plus homeowners or renters coverage. The discount often applies to both policies, and renters coverage on its own tends to be inexpensive, so adding it can sometimes cost less than the savings it unlocks on your car.
Bundling isn't automatically the cheapest choice, though. One company might offer a strong bundle discount but a higher base price for each policy, while two separate insurers could still come out ahead. The only way to know is to compare the combined total both ways.
When you call, ask for a quote on the bundle and on each policy separately. Make sure the coverage limits and deductibles match what you have now, and check whether the discount stays in place if you later drop one of the policies. A few minutes of comparison can show you whether keeping everything together or splitting it up makes more sense.
